Remember the hype around Mighty No. 9? That Kickstarter sensation promised to be Mega Man’s spiritual successor but ended up disappointing millions of backers. Now, exactly 10 years after its troubled release, Comcept—the studio behind this infamous project—has officially shut down. This marks the end of an era defined by ambitious promises, crowdfunding controversies, and hard lessons for indie developers.
The Rise and Fall of Comcept
Keiji Inafune, the legendary Mega Man producer, founded Comcept in 2010 after leaving Capcom. His vision was clear: create innovative games outside the corporate machine. The studio worked on titles like Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z and Soul Sacrifice, but Mighty No. 9 became their flagship project in 2016.
The Kickstarter campaign raised an impressive $3.8 million, breaking records and generating massive excitement. However, the final product arrived plagued with bugs, delays, and mediocre gameplay that fell far short of expectations. Fans felt betrayed when the “better than Mega Man” promise crumbled.
What Happened After Mighty No. 9?
Following the Mighty No. 9 disaster, Comcept launched another Kickstarter for Red Ash—a project that never materialized. In 2017, Level-5 acquired the studio, rebranding it as LEVEL5 Comcept. The team contributed to Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, which achieved one million sales.
Inafune departed in 2024, and the studio became Level-5 Osaka. The original Comcept existed only on paper until January 13, 2026, when shareholders decided to dissolve it completely. The official notice appeared in Kanpo on January 29.
Why Mighty No. 9 Failed
The collaboration between Comcept (concept) and Inti Creates (development) couldn’t deliver on the enormous expectations. Multiple factors contributed to this crowdfunding failure:
- Constant development delays frustrated backers
- Quality issues and technical problems at launch
- Rumors about mismanaged funds and priorities
- Premature announcements about animated series
Inafune attempted other projects like ReCore (2016 Xbox exclusive) and even ventured into NFTs in 2022, but none achieved breakthrough success.
The Ironic Twist: Mega Man Returns
Here’s the kicker: at Game Awards 2025, Capcom announced Mega Man: Dual Override for 2027, coming to PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC. While Mighty No. 9’s creator closed shop, the original Blue Bomber thrives. The real Mega Man proves that legacy beats imitation.
Lessons for Gamers and Developers
Don’t blindly trust hype—even industry legends make mistakes. Kickstarter promises don’t equal results.
The Comcept shutdown teaches valuable lessons about crowdfunding transparency and realistic expectations. However, the team’s work on Fantasy Life i shows they could deliver quality when properly integrated. Perhaps Inafune will return someday, like Hironobu Sakaguchi with Mistwalker. Did you back Mighty No. 9? The gaming industry remains ruthless, but authentic franchises endure.
