Dispatch Censored on Switch 2: What Changed?

Two Nintendo Switch consoles on table behind police tape

The gaming world has been buzzing with controversy since AdHoc Studio’s critically acclaimed title Dispatch launched on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. While the game itself remains a masterpiece of storytelling and gameplay, Nintendo’s censorship policies have significantly altered the experience for Switch owners, sparking heated debates about artistic freedom and platform restrictions.

Dispatch Nintendo Switch Censorship: What Got Changed?

The PC and PlayStation 5 versions of Dispatch offered players complete control over mature content through a “Visual Censorship” toggle. This feature allowed gamers to decide whether they wanted to see uncensored scenes featuring nudity, explicit gestures, and other adult-oriented content. However, the Nintendo Switch version tells a different story.

On Nintendo platforms, the censorship mode is permanently enabled with no option to disable it. Black bars obscure scenes that were previously visible, fundamentally changing the context of certain moments. A particularly notable example involves the character Blonde Blazer, who asks a colleague about her dress for a formal event. The original scene’s humor relied on subtle visual details that are now completely hidden behind censorship bars, stripping away the comedic timing.

Audio Censorship Beyond Visuals

The censorship extends beyond visuals. Episode four contains a sequence that originally featured explicit audio elements. In the Nintendo version, this scene plays in near-complete silence, even with profanity filters disabled. AdHoc Studio later released a patch adding background music and ambient sounds, but the original intent was lost.

Why Nintendo Switch 2 Dispatch Is Censored

AdHoc Studio released an official statement addressing the censorship controversy:

“Different platforms have different content evaluation criteria, and applications are reviewed individually. We worked with Nintendo to ensure the content in the game meets the criteria for release on their platforms, but the main story and gameplay remain identical to the original version.”

The real culprit appears to be Japan’s CERO rating system, which maintains strict standards for nudity and adult content. Nintendo eShop typically hosts a single global version of games, meaning a purchase in any region automatically adapts to your console’s language settings. Since CERO requires significant censorship, and one version serves all regions, the restrictions apply universally.

The Independent Developer Challenge

CD Projekt Red managed to create separate versions of Cyberpunk 2077 for different regions, but AdHoc Studio lacks those resources. As an independent team formerly from Telltale Games, Ubisoft, and Night School Studio, maintaining multiple versions with separate patches would be financially unfeasible.

Dispatch Game Technical Performance

Despite the censorship controversy, Dispatch delivers solid technical performance across Nintendo platforms:

  • Nintendo Switch: 720p resolution at 30fps, 11GB storage
  • Nintendo Switch 2: 1440p resolution at 60fps, 27GB storage
  • Full backward compatibility between both consoles
  • Release date: January 28, 2026
  • Price: $30/€30

Community Reaction and Critical Reception

The gaming community has expressed strong disapproval of the censorship, particularly noting Nintendo’s inconsistency. Over 100 games with “Hentai” in their titles remain available on the eShop, yet Dispatch faced strict scrutiny. Despite this controversy, the game maintains impressive credentials with 94% of OpenCritic reviewers recommending it and positive Metacritic scores.

AdHoc Studio has advised other developers against releasing episodic games on Nintendo platforms due to the content approval difficulties they experienced. This statement reveals the challenging nature of their negotiations with the platform holder.

Is Dispatch Worth Playing on Switch?

Dispatch remains an exceptional eight-episode adventure showcasing superhero life through a realistic lens. The clever writing, engaging gameplay, and unique art style shine through despite the censorship. Players seeking the complete uncensored experience should consider PC or PlayStation 5 versions, while Nintendo owners will still enjoy a compelling narrative experience with some visual limitations.
